SUR 110 - Surgical & Central Service Technology 1


Credits: 5
4 Lecture Hours 2 Lab Hours

Prerequisites: Acceptance into the CST or SUR programs.

 
Description
This course is designed to acquaint the student with the Operating Room and Central Service. The student is introduced to the environment, the history of surgery, legal and ethical responsibilities of the health care professional, professionalism and human relationships, computers, robotics and physics as they relate to surgery and Central Service. Emphasis is placed on asepsis, infection control, basic instrumentation, sterilization, disinfection and basic patient care skills. This course requires a per credit health career fee; check the tuition and fee schedule for the current rate.


Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:

  1. List two duties of each member of the surgical team.
  2. Define the three phases of the perioperative process.
  3. Identify by sight all the equipment on the unit outline and name a specific function of each.
  4. Identify the proper technique for stocking and stock rotation.
  5. Determine the differences between restricted, semi-restricted and unrestricted areas of the hospital.
  6. List proper attire for the restricted, semi-restricted and unrestricted areas of the hospital.
  7. Identify with 95% accuracy all the commonly used general surgery instruments from the attached list.
  8. Identify the rights of the patient.
  9. Define aseptic technique and theoretically apply its principles.
  10. List the steps necessary to clean and package a surgical instrument effectively.
  11. Demonstrate basic patient care skills.
