SUR 231C - Surgical Technology Clinical 1 Credits: 6 360 Clinical Hours
Prerequisites: SUR 120 Co-requisites: SUR 230
Description This course allows a student to transfer and apply theoretical knowledge to the clinical setting. Students receive concentrated exposure to surgical procedures. This course requires a per credit health career fee; check the tuition and fee schedule for the current rate. Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:
- Employ a thorough knowledge of aseptic technique in the surgical suite.
- Demonstrate the method of creating a sterile field by draping back table, Mayo stand and other fields while maintaining good principles of asepsis.
- Assess the surgeon’s needs during minor procedures.
- Function alone as a scrub technologist on minor procedures.
- Identify one’s own breaks in aseptic technique and the breaks of other team members and be able to rectify them.
- Demonstrate the correct manner of passing instruments.
- Assess the surgeon’s needs during major procedures having had previous experience with that particular procedure.
- Demonstrate the initiation and execution of sponge, needle and instrument counts for all procedures.
- Use basic instruments appropriately during the surgical procedure.
- Apply principles of safety to every aspect of the clinical environment.
