ENG 111 - Technical English


Credits: 3

Prerequisites: ENG 095  or score of 79 or higher on English Placement Test

 
Description
This is a course to promote effective written technical communication. The student analyzes and synthesizes ideas in technical fields and presents them in report, article and essay form. This course relates to the student’s field of study and substitutes for ENG 101  with English Department approval and only in specified certificate and apprenticeship programs. Enrollment in this course is dependent on a satisfactory score on the College placement test or successful completion of the appropriate developmental courses.


Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:

  1. Apply standard English grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling to all writing in numerous assignments with a technical emphasis.
  2. Write and revise grammatical and rhetorical types of sentences of syntax variety in standard English.
  3. Develop effective paragraphs, including the development of generalizations supported by examples.
  4. Proofread and edit: skills essential to the writing process.
  5. Apply skills listed above to the writing of technical reports.
  6. Employ reading, thinking, and writing skills in all essays.
  7. Write essays with an exit error level of 2% or less.

  7. Use of quotations and paraphrase to avoid plagiarism
  8. Five to seven reports and essays most of which incorporate technical information and evaluation, totaling 15-20 pages of writing for the semester
