GGY 202 - Historical Geology Credits: 3 2 Lecture Hours 2 Lab Hours
Description This is a course for both science and non-science majors on the evolution of the earth and its crust. Principal topics include geologic time concepts, stratigraphic principles and paleontology. Pleistocene glaciation and the rise of the human species, a geologic history of the Pittsburgh area and current concepts of continental drift, plate tectonics and sea floor spreading will be examined. Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:
- Apply scientific inquiry to the study of historical geology.
- Explain in some detail the evolution of Earth’s surface.
- Discuss transient geological activities and their influence on the building of landforms.
- Apply concepts learned in course by conducting laboratory experiment and participating in field trips.
