THE 171 - Stage Combat 2: Topics in Armed Combat, Experimental Credits: 3 1 Lecture Hours 2 Studio Hours
Description This course is designed to instruct students in the fundamental techniques and principles of safe and effective armed theatrical stage combat. Coursework will train the student actor to recognize safe partnering and the execution of techniques using theatrical props such as stage swords, training knives, and improvised weapons for the performance of theatrical works which include physical conflict. Students will be expected to work in close physical proximity alongside other participants in the course, and a final exam consisting of the performance of choreographed work will be required. Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:
- Learn and perform unarmed fight choregraphy within the context of a theatrical scene.
- Make informed decisions regarding movement performance choices as they relate to character scene and context.
- Research a play with an eye toward performing scenes of physical conflict.
- Advocate for personal safety as needed in rehearsal situations.
- Record fight notation for personal or stage management use.
- Recognize proper angles at which to work in order to satisy audience sight lines.
- Work closely with others.
- Accept direction and criticism.
