SUR 241C - Surgical Technology Clinical 2 Credits: 6 360 Clinical Hours
Prerequisites: SUR 231C Co-requisites: SUR 240
Description This course allows a student to transfer and apply theoretical knowledge to the clinical setting and develop the sophisticated skills required for specialty surgical procedures. This course requires a per credit health career fee; check the tuition and fee schedule for the current rate. Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:
- Employ a thorough knowledge of aseptic technique in the surgical suite.
- Demonstrate the method of creating a sterile field by draping back table, Mayo stand and other fields while maintaining good principles of asepsis.
- Assess the surgeon’s needs for minor and major procedures.
- Function alone as a scrub technologist on minor and common major procedures.
- Identify one’s own breaks in aseptic technique and the breaks of other team members and be able to rectify them.
- Identify the basic instruments for each surgical specialty.
- Handle basic instruments appropriately during the surgical procedure.
- Exercise professional behavior in the clinical setting as outlined in the student manual.
- Prioritize skills in the clinical environment.
- Apply principles of safety to every aspect of the clinical environment.
