Associate of Science

This program prepares students with a broad knowledge in computer information systems for transfer to a four-year institution. Students may continue in their studies at another college and earn a bachelor’s degree in computer science, information science or information technology.

Upon successful completion of the program, students will:

  1. Explain how a computer system’s hardware components impact performance of software.
  2. Implement programs using various data structures and abstract data types.
  3. Design a database application system with a representative database management system (DBMS).
  4. Create advanced graphical user interface components in a program or database.

Students transferring to a college involved with PA-TRAC (Pennsylvania Transfer and Articulation Center) and pursuing a B.S. in Computer Science can transfer seamlessly by taking the appropriate electives. Students must see an advisor or counselor regarding electives in the following areas:

1 Humanities Elective: Two courses from the approved PA-TRAC list of humanities electives recommended. See Pennsylvania Transfer and Articulation .

2 Restricted Elective: Take one course of computers, math, science, social science or humanities electives.

3 Social Sciences Elective: Two courses from the approved PA-TRAC list of social science electives recommended. See Pennsylvania Transfer and Articulation .

4 Mathematics Electives: Students transferring to a TAOC institution must take Discrete Mathematics (MAT-135), Probability and Statistics (MAT-165) and Calculus 1 (MAT-201).

5 Science Electives: Take two lab-based science course sequence such as General Chemistry (CHM-151 and 152), General Biology (BIO-151 and 152), Anatomy and Physiology (BIO-161 and 162), or non-calculus Physics (PHY-141 and 142).

Data Structures Elective: Choose CIT-244 or CIT-245

Students transferring to a non-TAOC institution or transferring to an Information Science, Cybersecurity or Information Technology degree other than a Bachelors in Computer Science should consult with a transfer counselor and their preferred baccalaureate institution when choosing a course to fulfill any elective.

Transfer Opportunities


Articulation agreements are available for students to complete the Associate Degree and transfer to California University of Pennsylvania , Capella University , La Roche College , Pennsylvania College of Technology , Pennsylvania State University Commonwealth Campuses , Robert Morris University . It is important that students consult with a counselor early in their program to develop a course plan most appropriate for the school to which they intend to transfer.
