HIT Admissions Requirements   

This program provides education in Health Information Technology: Development, protection and use of patient health information, medical coding, clinical quality improvement, health law and compliance, informatics, analytics, data structure, content and information governance, organizational management and leadership and insurance reimbursement. Students may select courses in the fourth semester to focus on either Revenue Cycle Management or Healthcare Data Analytics. 

Employment opportunities exist in insurance companies, hospitals, ambulatory care centers, long-term care, behavioral health care facilities and physician practices.

Graduates of this program are eligible to take the national examination of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) to qualify as a registered health information technician (RHIT). Graduates of the Healthcare Data Analytics track are prepared for a Certified Health Data Analyst certificate from AHIMA. All graduates achieve a Certified Risk Adjustment Coder certificate from the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). 

Students must make separate application to this program.

The Health Information Technology/Health Informatics accreditor of Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) is the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). The College’s accreditation for the Associate degree in Health Information Technology/Health Informatics has been reaffirmed through 2028-2029.

Upon successful completion of the program, the graduate will:

  1. Apply technical proficiency in the entry-level competencies for health information technicians.
  2. Identify and demonstrate the professional attitudes and ethical behaviors consistent with the Code of Ethics of the American Health Information Management Association.
  3. Use effective written and oral communication skills appropriate for interpersonal and group environments.
  4. Employ critical thinking and problem-solving skills in professional practice.
  5. Meet eligibility requirements to sit for the national credentialing exam of the American Health Information Management Association to qualify as a Registered Health Information Technician.

CCAC graduates in Allied Health careers can further their education in Health Services Management/ Administration through articulation agreements with Carlow University  or Robert Morris University .
