CDL 103 - Commercial Vehicle Systems and Maintenance


Credits: 2

Prerequisites: CDL 101  
Co-requisites: CDL 102 , CDL 104 , CDL 105  

Description
Students learn the functions of the various systems of a Class “A” Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV), as well as proper pre-trip inspection techniques. With this understanding, students identify mechanical defects affecting the safe operation of a CMV and perform proper maintenance of the parts and systems of a CMV.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:

  1. Locate the safety items (fire extinguisher, triangles, etc.) in a tractor trailer.
  2. Describe the routine utilized for a thorough and complete pre-trip inspection.
  3. Identify damaged system components.
  4. Describe the function and relationship between vehicle systems.
  5. Recite the procedure used to complete an airbrake check.
  6. Classify the different types of maintenance.
  7. Describe the driver’s responsibilities in maintaining the rig.
  8. Summarize the inspection, repair and maintenance requirements as stated in the Federal Motor Carriers Safety Regulations.
  9. Identify when vehicle systems and parts are not working correctly.
  10. Detect potential environmental or mechanical issues through the application of the physical senses.
