CDL 104 - Commercial Vehicle Safety Regulations

Prerequisites: CDL 101  
Co-requisites: CDL 102 , CDL 103 , CDL 105  

Description
This course presents material needed for entry-level employment in the Transportation industry including mandatory Federal Motor Carriers Safety Regulations (FMCSA) Entry-Level Driver training topics (hours of service, driver qualifications, driver health, driver wellness and whistle-blower protection). Students learn map reading, how to manage a delivery schedule and plan trips as well as FMCSA Hours of Service (HOS) regulations, electronic logging devices (ELDs) and North American Standard Vehicle Inspection criteria. The International Registration Plan, International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) and enhanced load/cargo securement techniques are also discussed.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:

  1. List federal, state and international regulations that apply to commercial drivers. 
  2. Demonstrate ability to read a map correctly.
  3. Create a delivery schedule based on time, availability and hours of service requirements.
  4. Evaluate the features of various ELDs and select an appropriate ELD for a specified use case. 
  5. Describe whistleblower protection regulations. 
  6. Apply enhanced load and cargo securement techniques to problems involving different types of cargo.
