  • SUR 110 - Surgical & Central Service Technology 1

    Prerequisites: Acceptance into the CST or SUR programs.

     
    Description
    This course is designed to acquaint the student with the Operating Room and Central Service. The student is introduced to the environment, the history of surgery, legal and ethical responsibilities of the health care professional, professionalism and human relationships, computers, robotics and physics as they relate to surgery and Central Service. Emphasis is placed on asepsis, infection control, basic instrumentation, sterilization, disinfection and basic patient care skills. This course requires a per credit health career fee; check the tuition and fee schedule for the current rate.


    Learning Outcomes
    Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:

    1. List two duties of each member of the surgical team.
    2. Define the three phases of the perioperative process.
    3. Identify by sight all the equipment on the unit outline and name a specific function of each.
    4. Identify the proper technique for stocking and stock rotation.
    5. Determine the differences between restricted, semi-restricted and unrestricted areas of the hospital.
    6. List proper attire for the restricted, semi-restricted and unrestricted areas of the hospital.
    7. Identify with 95% accuracy all the commonly used general surgery instruments from the attached list.
    8. Identify the rights of the patient.
    9. Define aseptic technique and theoretically apply its principles.
    10. List the steps necessary to clean and package a surgical instrument effectively.

  • SUR 120 - Surgical Technology 2

    Description
    This course is designed to build on the theoretical foundation of SUR 110  Surgical and Central Service Technology 1 with emphasis on nomenclature, the application of the principles of aseptic technique, wound healing, wound closure materials and surgical drains. The student will be introduced to radiographic procedures and techniques as well as principles and application of electrosurgical generators and lasers. The student will learn how to integrate the surgical supplies and equipment as they relate to opening and closing an abdominal incision as well as minimally invasive surgery. This course requires a per credit health career fee; check the tuition and fee schedule for the current rate.


    Learning Outcomes
    Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:

    1. List the principles of aseptic technique and give a specific example of each.
    2. Demonstrate the surgical scrub procedure to the instructor, maintaining principles of aseptic technique.
    3. Demonstrate the method for donning a sterile gown maintaining principles of aseptic technique.
    4. Demonstrate the closed glove procedure maintaining principles of aseptic technique.
    5. Identify, verbally and visually, with 95% accuracy and under aseptic technique the commonly used instruments on the general surgery instrument hand out.
    6. Identify three complications of wound healing.
    7. Identify the commonly used natural absorbable, synthetic absorbable, natural non-absorbable and synthetic non-absorbable suture and name two specific uses of each.
    8. Explain the difference between aerobic and anaerobic cultures and identify the specific collection device for each.
    9. Explain the difference between a ground reference and a high frequency generator.

    Description
    This course continues the theoretical foundation of SUR 110  Surgical and Central Service Technology 1 and SUR 120  Surgical Technology 2. The student is introduced to the specialty areas of surgery and the application of basic scientific knowledge to specific surgical procedures. Specialty areas include general surgery, gynecology, orthopedics, peripheral vascular, cardiac, thoracic, genitourinary, endoscopic and laser surgery. This course will also introduce the student to the pharmacology of surgically related drugs and anesthetic agents, including the calculation of dosages and the effects of drugs and anesthetic agents on the human body. This course requires a per credit health career fee; check the tuition and fee schedule for the current rate.
    Learning Outcomes
    Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:

    1. Identify the factors affecting absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion of drugs.
    2. Define anesthesia.
    3. Identify the specific incision used for each of the procedures included on the unit outlines.
    4. Identify, verbally and visually, with 95% accuracy, all the specialty instruments on the instrument handouts.
    5. Identify the specific pathology leading to the procedures identified on the unit outline.
    6. Explain the difference between abdominal and vaginal gynecological instruments and list the instruments that are appropriate for both.
    7. Define the following fractures and the recommended treatment modalities of each: transverse, longitudinal, oblique, comminuted, impacted and pathological.
    8. Identify the indications, advantages and disadvantages of the following surgical incisions: median sternotomy, posterolateral thoracotomy, anterolateal thoractomy and thoracoabdominal.
    9. Identify the general type of suture used on each procedure.

    Description
    This course allows a student to transfer and apply theoretical knowledge to the clinical setting. Students receive concentrated exposure to surgical procedures. This course requires a per credit health career fee; check the tuition and fee schedule for the current rate.
    Learning Outcomes
    Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:

    1. Employ a thorough knowledge of aseptic technique in the surgical suite.
    2. Demonstrate the method of creating a sterile field by draping back table, Mayo stand and other fields while maintaining good principles of asepsis.
    3. Assess the surgeon’s needs during minor procedures.
    4. Function alone as a scrub technologist on minor procedures.
    5. Identify one’s own breaks in aseptic technique and the breaks of other team members and be able to rectify them.
    6. Demonstrate the correct manner of passing instruments.

    Description
    This course expands on the theoretical foundations of SUR 110  Surgical and Central Service Technology 1, SUR 120  Surgical Technology 2 and SUR 230  Surgical Technology 3. Emphasis is placed on complex surgical procedures, utilization of surgical microscopes, care and handling of microsurgical instruments, advanced patient care concepts, preparation for all types of hazards and employability skills. Specialty areas include ophthalmology, otolaryngology, and oral surgery, neurosurgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, pediatric surgery, advanced patient care concepts and procedures involving organ procurement and transplant, surgical oncology, trauma surgery and patients with special needs.     Description
    This course is a continuation of Acting Practicum 1 (THE130P) designed to prepare the beginning acting students to learn the rehearsal and performance sequence. A rehearsal and performance sequence trains the actor to understand voice, body and mind as it relates to character and the play. Significantly participation in the rehearsal process will lead to  confidence and quality in performance. Participating in a semester performance will be required.

    This course is a critical survey of motion pictures. The focus is on the literary, technical, social and cultural development of film. A historical and technical text is combined with critical, in-depth analysis of films.

    Description
    This is a Sheet Metal Apprentice course in welding techniques associated with ferrous and non-ferrous metals thicker than .0625”. Use of advanced techniques for both GMAW and SMAW welding processes will be covered. AWS welding procedures and certification testing procedures will be explained and practiced.


    Learning Outcomes
    Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:

    1. Interpret weld symbols on a fabrication drawing.
    2. Execute welds in both GMAW and SMAW processes on materials thicker than .0625 in positions associated with field erection using short circuit transfer.
    3. Choose appropriate SMAW electrodes given base metal and position to weld in.
    4. Execute welds in GMAW the process on materials thicker than .0625 in positions associated with field erection using spray arc transfer.
    5. Follow a procedure for an AWS welding certification test.
    6. Interpret welding procedures, given a completed AWS welding procedure form.
    7. Choose necessary amperage for a given wire diameter to achieve a spray arc in the GMAW process.
    8. Execute welds in all positions using spray transfer in the GMAW process.
    9. Explain procedure for executing a structural weld on ferrous metal .375 and thicker.

    Description
    This course is designed to present a better understanding of additional components of flux-cored automatic welding, FCAW. Emphasis will be placed on deposition rates, shielding gases, and welding in the 3G and 4G positions.
    Learning Outcomes
    Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:

    1. Explain deposition rates and how they relate to amperage.
    2. Weld FCAW in the vertical and overhead positions.
    3. Become familiar with the types of materials and limitations for FCAW.
    4. List and explain the various types of material used in FCAW and their limitations.

    This course is designed to provide understanding of advanced components of flux-cored automatic welding, FCAW. Emphasis will be placed on electrode groups and classifications. Students will take an AWS D1.1/1.5 welder certification test in FCAW.
